In-person Escape Rooms started around 2007; since then, how they are designed has changed.
Generation 1: The entire room consists of padlocks and combination locks. To get through the room, you solve puzzles that allow you to put a solution into those locks.
Generation 2: The room consists of locks and technology. The technology works by you physically interacting with something in the room, and electronics make something happen when you’re correct.
Generation 3: The entire room uses technology that reacts to your input. There is not a single lock in this type of room.
Because of the change throughout the years, the higher the generation, the newer the room tends to be (with exceptions). We have found that different people prefer different generations, so try it yourself!
